Michael Jackson fans celebrate as Dr Conrad Murray found guilty

On November 7, 2011 a jury at a court in LA found Dr Conrad Murray guilty of the unintentional killing of Michael Jackson. The trial that lasted 6 weeks saw 500 pieces of evidence and nearly 50 witnesses which led to the jury unanimously deciding that the doctor was guilty of involuntary manslaughter and gross misconduct. During his trial Murray continuously denied accusations of administering the pop star with the sedative Propofol that eventually killed him.

The trial was followed by many around the world and, just like other events in Jackson’s life, his fans displayed a great amount of passionate support, reminiscent to when the King of Pop was himself trialled in 2005 for child sexual abuse.

Jackson’s family attended the trial and were adamant that Murray was guilty. The singer’s sister, La Toya Jackson, took to twitter after the trial tweeting: ‘VICTORY!!!!!!’ and she thanked everyone for all their support during the trial.

Murray will be sentenced on November 29, 2011 and will remain in custody until then. It is predicted he will receive up to 4 years in prison.

It cannot be denied that Jackson was surrounded by much controversy throughout his life. Many have criticised him for his child sexual abuse allegations, speculation over his children, his skin colour, plastic surgery and also his obscure behaviour. No matter what the scandal was, Jackson’s fans from around the globe have continued to show their loyalty and even after he passed away, they were there to fight for justice for him.

After Jackson died on June 25, 2009, thousands of tributes made by fans to the King of Pop. His memorial service was televised and watched around the world by millions and other artists paid tribute by singing his songs during their concerts, including artists who performed at Glastonbury Festival that year.

A close friend of the star, billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed, the former owner of Harrods, erected a statue of the star outside Fulham FC’s football stadium as a tribute to Jackson. Causing much debate, Al-Fayed was adamant that it would remain at the site no matter who opposed it.

It is clear from recent events that no matter what happened to Michael Jackson throughout his life - his music and personality influenced many people in the past and is sure to do the same in the future.
